OROT Project Honored with “Family and Person-Centered Award” by Children’s Healthcare Canada

OROT project in partnership with Braver has been recognized with the prestigious “Family and Person-Centered Award” by Children’s Healthcare Canada. This remarkable achievement is the result of the clinical leadership of Emily Lecker, OROT’s unique user-centric approach facilitated by co-creation specialist Antoine Beauchesne, the research excellence of Sara Ahmed, and the entrepreneurial innovation of the Braver team.

The Vision: Enhancing Parental Involvement in Therapy

A year ago, the Rehabilitation team at the Lethbridge-Layton-Mackay Rehabilitation Centre identified a crucial need: increasing parental involvement in therapy sessions. Research consistently shows that when parents are actively engaged in their child’s therapeutic process, outcomes improve significantly. With this in mind, the team envisioned a solution that would allow parents to access photos, videos, and strategies from therapy sessions, enabling them to play a more active role in their child’s care.

To bring this idea to life, they turned to OROT, the connected health innovation hub at CIUSSS West-Central Montreal, to find a way to make this vision a reality.

The Solution: A Co-Created App

OROT’s team, led by Chief Innovation Officer Danina Kapetanovic, facilitated a partnership between the Rehabilitation team and Braver, an innovative app designed to securely connect healthcare professionals and families. Together, they embarked on a co-creation journey, adapting Braver to meet the specific needs of the Rehabilitation team. This collaboration was essential to ensure the app would seamlessly integrate into the therapeutic process while providing meaningful insights for parents.

The adapted app was then rigorously evaluated by the research team from McGill University’s School of Physical and Occupational Therapy and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Rehabilitation of Greater Montreal (CRIR).

The Impact: Empowering Parents and Enhancing Therapy

Today, Braver is being used by therapists, transforming the way they involve the parents in their child’s therapy. The app allows parents to communicate directly with therapists, giving them greater insight into their child’s therapeutic journey. This innovative approach has not only improved communication but also fostered stronger collaboration between families and healthcare professionals.

Looking Ahead

This award highlights the power of collaboration, innovation, and patient-centered care. As we celebrate this success, we look forward to building on this momentum and continuing to push the boundaries of healthcare innovation. The future is bright, and we are excited for what lies ahead.
